fig tree

Post by tdunn » Sat Mar 26, 2011 11:15 am

Is there a chance an apparently dead fig tree might sprout up again through the root system? The tree is one year old and was planted along the south side of the house in a large planter box. If there is a chance how long should I wait before giving up? Than you.

If it wasn't protected over the winter, it is possible that it might not have survived. When they are in a planter and not planted directly in the ground, they are more exposed to the cold. You can take a knife and scratch the bark to see if it is green underneath. It may be alive further down. Prune back any dead branches and wait to see if new growth flushes out this spring. If the roots survived you will get new growth. You just have to wait and see if it puts up any new growth. You might end up having to cut it back to 6". Good luck.
